One of the consistent questions I, Pastor Seth, have been asked over the course of my ministry is, “How do I pray?” That is a broad question and I often find with a little exploring in conversation that this question comes from a place of feeling inadequate and feeling like we don’t know how to pray because we compare ourselves to others or believe in some intriguing myths about prayer. If you would like a stronger, more fruitful prayer life, no matter how you feel about your prayer life right now, this workshop is for you. I will be leading a four-session workshop this spring addressing some major topics in prayer, including: · The secrets to praying out loud · Models for prayer that you can use everyday in every situation · How to use Scripture in your prayers · How to setup fruitful prayer times · Praying without words Ash Wednesday March 1
We are excited to announce that we will have an Ash Wednesday worship gathering on Wednesday, March 1 at 7:00pm to mark the start of the season of Lent and reflect upon the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on our behalf. What is Lent? Lent is a season of preparation and repentance used to anticipate the events of Good Friday and Easter. Having just finished Christmas, you recall how much preparation goes into that season. But how much preparing do we do for Good Friday and Easter? Relatively little. While Easter doesn’t tend to have all the decorative and festive entrapments of a contemporary Christmas celebration, it is essential that we prepare our hearts, minds, and spirits for the death and resurrection of our Lord. Lent is a forty day period starting on Ash Wednesday and ending at the conclusion of Holy Week (not counting Sundays—every Sunday is a celebration day of Jesus’ resurrection!). The forty days recalls both the Israelites’ forty years in the desert and Jesus’ forty days of fasting in the wilderness. What do we do at an Ash Wednesday worship service? Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and this is why Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is the day before—a time of feasting and revelry before the fast (a little too much revelry nowadays, perhaps). The aims of worship on Ash Wednesday are three: to reflect on our own mortality, sinfulness, and need for a savior; to renew our commitment to daily repentance and turn towards Christ; and to gratefully recall that Jesus has conquered sin and death on our behalf. Our gathering will reflect these aims with meditative liturgy and music as well as being marked by ashes—which symbolize sorrow, mourning, frailty, and repentance. Christ the newborn King is here!
Join us as we rejoice in the presence of God made new and alive to us in Jesus Christ! Bask in the light of the Messiah as we join together in a weekend of praise and worship. Saturday, December 24 5:00pm -- Community Caroling We will visit our friends and neighbors around Waterville to bring the warmth and love of Christ to them as we share cherished Christmas songs. A joyous spirit recommended, a great singing voice isn't necessary. Be a part of sharing joy with those in our community! We will plan to leave the church at 5:00. 7:00pm -- Candlelight Worship Service Take a few minutes out of what can be a hectic season and join us for a peaceful, hopeful, and calming worship gathering as we celebrate Jesus Christ, the light of the world! We invite you to set aside all the busyness and come relax and be at peace with our Lord. Sunday, December 25 11:00am -- Informal Worship Merry Christmas! You've opened your presents, now come join us to be in the presence of Christ. We have our more informal worship gathering in the fellowship hall - you get to eat and worship at the same time! Wear your favorite Christmas sweater or Christmas jammies and come on down! Pastor Seth is making beignets (doughnuts!). We will sing some favorite Christmas worship songs and contemplate God's mercy present in Christ Jesus, the Messiah! You are invited to join us for a morning of Advent and Christmas music as our wonderful choir presents our seasonal choir cantata at 11:00am this Sunday in the sanctuary. We will also have congregational singing, a message, and lunch!
Amidst the busyness of the season, dedicate some of your time and your spirit to rest and revel in the glory of God. See you Sunday! We look forward to seeing you Wednesday, November 9 at 6:00pm for our annual Harvest Dinner at the Federated Church Fellowship Hall!
We will be having a potluck dinner - bring a dish, if you can - but we'd love to see you whether you can bring a dish or not! Your presence is far more important than your food!
